Following a day of outstanding performances by 10 semi-finalists from across Canada, it was chef Benjamin Mauroy-Langlais who scooped the coveted title of Canada’s best young chef with his signature dish: 'Smoked eel, celeriac (spring in Kamouraska)'.
Competing at the Art Gallery in Toronto on 2 October, Benjamin Mauroy-Langlais was among 10 semi-finalists chosen by the Alma cookery school in Italy.
Each chef was given five hours cooking time to perfect and present their dish to a jury of industry heavyweights:
- Riccardo Bertolino
- Anthony Walsh
- Joël Watanabe
- Todd Perrin and
- Jen Agg.
Each signature dish was evaluated against the five "Golden Rules":

While Dominic Giroux took the crown as the People's Choice winner, it was Benjamin Mauroy-Langlais’s dish that wowed the judges.
Henceforth, chef Riccardo Bertolino from Maison Boulud, Montreal will help cultivate Chef Mauroy-Langlais’s signature dish as Canada's mentor chef.
He will also travel to Milan with him to cheer from the sidelines as he competes for the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 title.
Speaking of the experience that lies ahead, Bertolino said “I’m excited to be on this journey with Benjamin and help showcase Canada’s unprecedented young talent. With the right blend of creativity, passion and hard work, Benjamin is destined for success on the world stage.”
